I was a kid of fourteen when I started doing Karate classes in Lewisporte - a kid from a small town who barely knew what karate was. My father signed me up becasue I was an anxious, worrisome lad, and he thought karate might help. If it hadn't been for Mick Dwyer, I don't know if I would have stuck with it. Mick held out a hand to me, and was a mentor during classes and competitions. I loved Mick's fast and sharp Karate style, and to this day I recall and recount a number of things he taught me to the Karate kids I teach. Karate has been, and continues to be a big part of my life, and I owe part of that to Mick's kindness and dedication to the art. He taught me to keep Karate fun, and to look at it "One day at a time." Thank you, Mick - I bow to you deeply! Oss!

Sincere Condolences to Mick's family, I meet Mick while he lived and worked on the West Coast of Newfoundland, a number of years ago. We spent time talking about many many different topics and became friends, Mick also gave me copies of the books he had written, which I enjoyed reading very much.

When Mick and I were seventeen year old kids we went hunting up on Bay d’espoir highway. Mick, being Mick wasn’t content to ride along the highway, we had to walk our arses off in totally unfamiliar country. We started at daylight and around noon stopped on the edge of a bog to have a snack. We were there no more than ten minutes when two moose strolled out on the bog. Since it was my licence and gun I jumped to by feet and started drifting bullets across the bog at the moose. When the gun was empty and both moose strolled back into the woods unscathed, all I could do was look at my feet in embarrassment. Micky said “no odds bye, only first week of season yet.” On our way back we saw a couple of ducks in a pond that were at least a couple hundred yards away and I told Mick I was going to shoot one. He smirked and said “not as big as a moose ol’ buddy“. Long story short I shot and killed one of the ducks!! We got back to the road later that afternoon and spoke to a couple of hunters who asked us if we saw a moose. Mick said “ never saw any moose but me buddy here just shot a duck at a couple hundred yards! If we see a moose he’s dead for sure !! That was Mick a true, true friend.
