Obituary of Alma Tucker
Please share a memory of Alma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Passed away peacefully at Lakeside Home in Gander, on Sunday, November 17th, Alma Tucker, one month shy of her 90th birthday.
Alma was born in Joe Batts Arm on beautiful Fogo Island to Simon and Phoebe Hewitt on December 17, 1934, the fourth youngest of ten siblings. In her teens, she contracted TB and spent time in both the Corner Brook and St. John's sanatoriums. Although she was battling TB, she continued with her High School Education and successfully completed her high school diploma.
She started her working career at Lewisporte Wholesalers, worked at the Doctor's Clinic and Brittany Inns when it first opened in Lewisporte. They both owned a take-out business on Fogo Island.
She met Gideon on a tour boat in Lewisporte where he worked, and was married in 1961 in Joe Batt’s Arm. Following Gideon’s retirement from Marine Atlantic, they spent their time travelling going on many cruises and trips to different countries.
Alma dearly loved her gardening and spent her summers in her garden taking care of her many shrubs and flowers. It was her pride and joy.
Bowling was one of her favourite past times and she played on the bowling league in Lewisporte for many years.
Alma was strong in her faith and was very involved with St. Paul's Anglican church being on different committees and attending regularly.
She is predeceased by her husband Gideon Tucker, parents Simon and Pheobe Hewitt, siblings; Myrtle (Alex) Nichols, William (Frances) Hewitt, Harold (Edna) Hewitt, Adam Hewitt, Mabel (Ted) Curlew, Jessie (Alonzo) Brett, Bonnie Combden, and brother-in-law Douglas Tilley.
Leaving to cherish her memory are her sisters Sarah Hewitt and Gertrude Tilley, brother-in-law Harry Combden and many nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends. Also leaving behind her inlaws on her husband's side of the family.
The family will be receiving visitors at Families Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 20th from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Anglican church in Lewisporte at 11:00 am Thursday, November 21, 2024 with interment to follow at St.Paul’s Anglican Cemetery.
